Why Is My Cat So Clingy? 7 Reasons (and What Actually Helps)

Your cat follows you to the bathroom, cries at closed doors and plants itself on your keyboard the second a meeting starts. Sound familiar? Some cats are just built this way. Others are telling you something changed.

The key question: has your cat always been clingy, or is this new?

Always clingy: usually personality

  1. Breed and temperament. Some breeds, like Burmese, Ragdolls and Siamese, are known for being people-focused.
  2. Early weaning or hand-raising. Kittens taken from their mother early, or bottle-raised, often bond extra closely with humans.
  3. You're their favorite warm spot. Cats seek warmth, and your lap is about 37°C (98.6°F) of comfort.

Suddenly clingy: look for a cause

  1. Boredom. Not enough play or stimulation, especially for indoor cats and young cats.
  2. Change at home. A move, a new pet, a new baby, a new work schedule or a family member leaving.
  3. Stress or separation anxiety. Crying when you leave, over-grooming or accidents outside the litter box.
  4. Illness or aging. Pain, hyperthyroidism or cognitive changes in senior cats can show up as new neediness.

See your vet if the clinginess appeared suddenly together with changes in eating, drinking, litter box habits, weight, sleep or vocalizing.

What helps

  • Play twice a day. Ten to fifteen minutes with a wand toy, ending with a treat, burns energy and builds confidence.
  • Keep a routine. Feed, play and leave the house at predictable times.
  • Give them a spot near you. A bed or perch on or beside your desk satisfies the need to be close without blocking your screen.
  • Don't punish neediness. Pushing a clingy cat away often makes it try harder.
  • Enrich alone time. Puzzle feeders, window perches and a TV for cats help when you're out.

Working from home with a velcro cat

If your cat simply wants to be on you all day, give it a place to be that doesn't involve your keyboard. A cushioned bed next to your monitor works for some cats. For true lap cats, a cat pouch hoodie lets them nap against your chest while you type.

Use it sitting down, keep a hand under the pouch when you stand, and let your cat leave whenever it likes. Read our cat pouch hoodie buying guide for safety tips.

FAQ

Is it bad that my cat always wants to be held? Not if it's always been that way and your cat is healthy. It's a sign of trust.

Do clingy cats grow out of it? Kittens often become a little more independent with age, but cats with clingy personalities usually stay affectionate.

Why does my cat sit on my laptop? It's warm, it's where your attention is, and it works: you look at them.
